Protect your home and the things that matter

Buying a home is a major investment. Having the right buildings and contents insurance can help protect your property, your belongings and your finances if the unexpected happens.

Alongside helping you find the right mortgage, we can now support you with home insurance, making it easier to put essential protection in place as part of your home-buying journey.

Whether you're buying your first home, moving house, remortgaging or simply reviewing your existing cover, we're here to help you understand your options.

What each one covers

Buildings insurance

Buildings insurance is designed to protect the physical structure of your home against insured events. Depending on the policy selected, this can include areas such as the structure of your property, roofs, walls and floors, permanent fixtures and fittings, garages and other permanent outbuildings, and damage caused by insured events such as fire, flooding or storms.

If you're buying a property with a mortgage, your lender will usually expect appropriate buildings insurance to be in place from the point required under your mortgage agreement.

Contents insurance

While buildings insurance protects the property itself, contents insurance is designed to protect the possessions inside your home. Think about everything you would take with you if you moved house: furniture, televisions, computers, clothing, appliances and other personal belongings.

Depending on the cover selected, contents insurance can help protect these items against specified risks such as theft, fire and accidental damage.

Many homeowners choose to arrange combined buildings and contents insurance, providing protection for both the property and the belongings inside it under one insurance arrangement.

The right level of cover will depend on your home, your circumstances and the protection you need. We can help you explore your options and understand the cover available.

There's already plenty to think about when buying or remortgaging a home. Arranging your mortgage and discussing your protection needs at the same time can help make the process simpler.

Two questions that come up every time

Do I need buildings insurance for a mortgage?

If you're purchasing a property with a mortgage, your mortgage lender will generally require the property to have suitable buildings insurance in place in accordance with the lender's requirements. You normally don't have to purchase that insurance from your mortgage lender, which means you can explore the available options before deciding which policy is suitable for you. Contents insurance is generally optional, but it can provide valuable protection for your personal possessions.

Already have home insurance?

It can still be worth reviewing your existing policy. Your circumstances may have changed since you originally arranged your cover, particularly if you're moving to a new property, remortgaging, renovating or extending your home, purchasing more valuable belongings, or approaching your home insurance renewal date. Reviewing your insurance gives you an opportunity to check whether your existing cover still meets your needs.

Insurance can come with a lot of terminology, exclusions and different levels of cover. Our aim is to make the process straightforward. We'll help you understand the options available so you can make an informed decision about protecting your home and belongings.
